EU Seeks to Adopt USB Type-C Charging Ports for Mobile Device & Camera

As of September 1, 2024, only USB Type-C will effectively become the common charging port for all mobile devices, tablets, and cameras throughout the European Union. This provisional agreement on the amended Radio Equipment Directive (RED) was initially agreed upon by both Parliament and Council negotiators in early June of 2022.

In an effort to make products in the EU more sustainable and convenient for users, as well as reduce electronic waste, this law seeks to establish a single charging solution for a variety of electronic devices. If these new rules are enacted successfully, consumers will no longer require multiple charging cables each time they purchase a new device, but can instead use a single charger across a variety of electronic devices that all include USB Type-C charging ports. It also seeks to harmonize charging speeds for these devices so users can supercharge devices without needing a specific charger to do so. In making this change, the EU hopes it will lead to the continued re-use of chargers, saving the consumer money and reducing excess waste.

Where Things Stand:                                                                                                                                                                  Once Parliament and Council have formally approved the agreement (after the summer recess), the finalized directive will be published in the EU Official Journal. From that time, it will enter into force 20 days after the date of publication, and its rules will officially come into effect for manufacturers and importers within the EU within 24 months. These new rules will not apply to products that had been placed on the market prior to the date of application.
EU manufacturers and importers of rechargeable electrical and electronic devices must adhere to these requirements or risk being removed from the market.
