Heavy Nordic investments in battery production

BackClearly, industry and investors have increasingly realized that the green shift is on the rise and see the need for multiplying the efforts to reach current climate targets.
In the massive migration from fossil to electric energy, the availability of capable batteries is a major issue. All industries need batteries to electrify their operations for the Green Shift.

Therefore, it is now a worldwide race for the production of batteries. In Europe, the EU’s ‘Climate & Energy Package’ published in 2020 has made the importance of batteries more relevant, emphasizing that batteries are considered a key element in the stive for environmentally sound and sustainable solutions.

    Within the
Nordic counties one claims to have rather ideal conditions for extensive production of batteries, primarily due to access to renewable energy. Production of lithium-ion batteries is planned for several locations in the Nordic region. At present, it mostly concerns batteries for electric cars, ferries and energy storage.
    The company
Northvolt is already in operation in Sweden and one another progressive player in this context is the company FREYR Battery which will build at least 1 battery plant in Norway and one in Finland. One believes that a so-called Nordic Battery Belt can, and will, play a key role in the development and may become an epicenter for a value chain of circular economy, i.e. like a Nordic Silicon Valley within the battery industry.
FREYR has made an agreement with the Nemko Group regarding future testing services at their location.

    The
Nordic Council of Ministers has had a project aimed to promote the Nordic countries as a forerunner region in demanding and using sustainable design of batteries for consumer electronics and the transport sector, and to identify key opportunities, barriers and challenges in the transition towards a more sustainable use of battery technologies. The aesthetics of the design should meet with the overall sustainability: high quality, durability and smart assembly for refurbishing. Further information about this project may be seen here .
