Singapore Increases (MEP) Standards for Household Appliances.

Starting on January 1, 2022, the National Environmental Agency (NEA) will begin enforcing the increase in Minimum Energy Performance Standards (MEPS) of refrigerators, clothes dryers, casement and window air conditioners, and split-type air conditioner household appliances.

This mandatory standard will affect Singaporean manufacturers and suppliers of these household appliances and encourage these companies to introduce more environmentally friendly appliances into the market. This new implementation is in direct correlation with Singapore’s plan to implement new sustainability initiatives according to the Singapore Green Plan 2030.

Refrigerators, clothes dryers, and casement and window air conditioners will be required to increase their MEPS levels to two ticks, while split-type air conditioners must increase MEPS levels by 7% within the two-tick level, as well as have their limits for standby power reduced.

This increase in MEPS levels is also expected to maintain and lower the overall lifecycle costs of these household appliances, which in turn will encourage manufacturers to continue creating more eco-friendly appliances going forward. This will help the country of Singapore to reduce its overall carbon footprint.

In order for manufacturers to adhere to these new requirements, they must properly test the products against the increased MEPS levels. Appliances already on the market have a transition period of a year to comply with these changes. Failure to comply will result in these products being withdrawn or failing to be imported into the Singaporean market.
