New requirements for telecom lithium batteries in Brazil

      Back

Brazil’s telecom regulator ANATEL has recently published Law No. 5314 which implies a major compliance shift for network infrastructure equipment. It establishes new certification requirements for stationary lithium batteries used in telecom applications – a measure that will directly affect manufacturers of network infrastructure, backup power systems and data center equipment.

The new law includes mandatory technical requirements and conformity assessment procedures for secondary lithium accumulators (batteries) for stationary applications, which are intended for use with telecom systems such as: -Base stations, -Network infrastructure, -Data center backup systems.
The law applies to such battery systems used in: -Telecom power backup systems, -Energy storage associated with telecom equipment, and -Infrastructure requiring high or medium discharge battery performance.

    Certification matters:

    • The certification requirements are in accordance with the existing ANATEL conformity assessment framework, i.e:.

    • Testing at an ANATEL-accredited laboratory (usually in-country)

    • CoC by OCD • CoH by ANATEL

    • Family model approval is permitted

    • Certification must be maintained with periodic reassessment every three years

    • Local applicant required.
