The Telecommunications Regulatory Commission of Sri Lanka (TRCSL) has made its Equipment Clearance System (ECS) the required platform for telecommunications equipment approvals and device clearances.
As of October 1, 2026, all Type Approval, IMEI and Non-IMEI device clearance requests must now be submitted and processed through ECS.
Mandatory submissions include Type Approval administration, IMEI registration and clearance, Non-IMEI device clearance and Short Range Device (SRD) approvals, touching most of the import and market-entry process for radio and telecom equipment in Sri Lanka.
Products that require TRCSL approval include:
-
Mobile phones and smartphones
-
Cellular-enabled tablets
-
Wi-Fi and Bluetooth devices
-
IoT devices
-
SRDs
-
IMEI-enabled equipment
-
Other radio or telecom terminal equipment
Manufacturers, importers and distributors should check that the right ECS account registrations are in place. Any internal approval procedures and submission workflows that relied on the old process will need updating, so that future Type Approval, IMEI clearance and Non-IMEI clearance applications are all filed through ECS.
Applications submitted outside ECS may not be processed, which could mean slower approvals and device clearances, and knock-on delays to import and market-entry timelines.
Nemko can help you determine which approvals your products need, as well as support Type Approval submissions, coordinate local approval activities, and assist with IMEI and Non-IMEI device clearance.
We can also advise on the documentation and compliance steps required for products entering the Sri Lankan market.
