How long have you been working in the field? How long have you been working for Nemko?
I have been working in the product safety and compliance industry for 19 years and have proudly been part of the Nemko team for a total of 6 years. Throughout my career, I've had the opportunity to evaluate thousands of products across a wide range of industries, helping manufacturers bring safe, compliant equipment to market.
What drew you to this field initially?
I've always been fascinated by how machines and electrical systems work. Early in my career, I realized that product safety engineering combined everything I enjoyed—technical problem-solving, continuous learning, and working directly with customers. Knowing that my work helps protect people while enabling innovation makes this career especially rewarding.
List the areas of your experience working in FE/SI/NSF or any related field (standards, types of testing, etc.)
Over the past 19 years, I have specialized in Field Evaluations (FE), Special Inspections (SI), and equipment safety compliance across numerous industries. At Nemko, I currently serve as the SEMI S2 Lead and Machinery Lead, supporting customers and fellow engineers on complex projects.
My experience includes industrial machinery, industrial control panels, semiconductor manufacturing equipment, laboratory equipment, food processing equipment, renewable energy systems, and custom-built industrial equipment.
I regularly work with standards including NFPA 79, NFPA 70/70E, UL 508A, UL 763, UL 61010-1, UL 62368-1, UL 1598, CSA SPE-1000, CSA C22.2 standards, EN 60204-1, EN ISO 12100, EN ISO 13849-1, SEMI S2, and NSF standards. My work involves product construction reviews, electrical safety testing, risk assessments, machinery safety evaluations, sanitation evaluations, marking and labeling compliance, documentation reviews, and final field labeling.
Is there a particular part of your job you find the most exciting or interesting?
Every project presents a new challenge, and that's what keeps the job exciting. I enjoy solving complex compliance issues and working alongside customers to find practical solutions that meet safety requirements without compromising their design goals. It's especially rewarding to watch a project evolve from an initial inspection with several findings to a successful final evaluation where the equipment is approved and labeled.
Why do you like working for Nemko?
What I appreciate most about Nemko is the opportunity to work on a wide variety of innovative technologies while collaborating with highly knowledgeable engineers around the world. Nemko encourages continuous learning, technical excellence, and teamwork, allowing me to grow professionally while helping customers navigate increasingly complex safety requirements.
What do you think the industry will look like in 20 years?
I believe the future of product safety will be shaped by artificial intelligence, robotics, automation, renewable energy, battery storage, and increasingly connected equipment. As systems become more intelligent and interconnected, safety evaluations will extend beyond traditional electrical hazards to include software, cybersecurity, functional safety, and system integration. Engineers will need to continuously adapt as technology evolves.
What are some market trends you're keeping an eye on?
I'm closely following advancements in semiconductor manufacturing, automation and robotics, AI-driven industrial systems, electric vehicles, battery energy storage systems, renewable energy, and smart manufacturing. These rapidly growing industries are introducing new technologies and safety challenges that will continue to shape the future of product compliance.
Describe what a typical day working looks like for you.
There really isn't a "typical" day, which is one of the things I enjoy most about my job. One day I may be performing a field evaluation at a manufacturing facility, and the next I may be reviewing electrical schematics, conducting product construction reviews, mentoring engineers, developing compliance strategies, or working with customers to resolve technical challenges. Every project offers an opportunity to learn something new.
When not working, how do you spend your spare time?
Outside of work, I enjoy spending quality time with my family, traveling, and experiencing different cultures. I also enjoy staying active and continuing to expand my technical knowledge by keeping up with emerging technologies and evolving safety standards. Continuous learning has always been an important part of both my professional and personal life.
