Learn more about our activities and geographical footprint from our annual performance report.
Below, you will find a high-level overview of Nemko’s Integrity and Sustainability initiatives, as well as the most recent focus on decent working conditions to meet the requirements set out in the Norwegian Transparency Act. All activities are work in progress, and will undergo continuous improvement.
2020 – Code of Conduct and Integrity Policy
In 2020, a new Code of Conduct and an Integrity Policy for Nemko’s conduct and provision of services were established. All employees receive annual integrity trainings, and a whistle-blowing channel has been established. This provides support for all employees handling challenges that may arise in day-to-day work operations.
2021 – Sustainability Policy
In order to meet expectations from employees and the wider society, Nemko established an environmental Sustainability Strategy and a corresponding internal Policy. Following a global hearing in the organization, concrete internal goals have been established that outlines clear expectations to all units and employees in Nemko.
2022 – Focus on working conditions (The Norwegian Transparency Act)
Driven by the Norwegian Transparency Act (Åpenhetsloven, hereafter referred to as the Act), we have carried out a preliminary assessment of the impact on fundamental human rights and working conditions of our operations and services in Norway and the countries where we are established. Below includes a summary of the due diligence activities and our main findings.
The assessment has been carried out through interviews with key stakeholders in the Nemko Group, document reviews and by using publicly available information about the geographies in which we operate. This work will be followed up through the establishment of documented, proportional internal procedures in the second part of 2022 and in 2023.
Preventive and mitigating actions
Preventive and mitigating actions related to specific potential threats against decent working conditions and fundamental human rights will be identified and implemented on a case-by-case basis, in a proportional manner at the relevant level in the organization.
Our main findings & follow up
Nemko provides TIC services, not products. Due to this, we do not have a supply chain in the ordinary meaning of the word. However, according to the Act, subcontractors for our provision of services are also considered to be included in our “supply chain”. Nemko has a highly educated workforce and subcontractors in a highly competitive labour market. They work under conditions thoroughly monitored by local governmental accreditation and designating bodies, in highly regulated work environments. This means that Nemko does not face the challenges related to unskilled workforce and subcontractors.
Nemko also has partners in the meaning somebody that supplies goods or services directly to Nemko, but which are not directly part of our service provision to customers. These partners include for instance lessors and suppliers of instruments, equipment or real estate; suppliers of goods and services that are used in our conduct of business; agents and other middlemen as well as partner labs and certification bodies.
The main finding is related to newbuilding and refurbishing projects throughout the world. We see that going forward, there is room for improvement of our follow up on working conditions on-site in certain geographies. In particular, we will demand more comfort regarding working conditions and Health, Safety and Environment (HSE) in the prequalification phase for future projects, and take a more targeted approach to on-site audits. It is believed that this can contribute to reducing the risk of undesirable practices.
