Egypt, which is officially named the Arab Republic of Egypt, is the Northeast corner of Africa. The population is now above 110 million, with Cairo as the country's capital and the largest city. Egypt is the second-largest economy in Africa.

At the end of January, the Egyptian National Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (NTRA) announced that from1 February, they block the activation of new mobile phones that do not meet internationally approved specifications and standards, particularly those set by the Global System for Mobile Communications Association (GSMA). This decision is part of the NTRA’s broader efforts to protect users’ rights, ensure safety, and maintain high-quality telecom services in Egypt. The given reason is to safeguard users, enhance service quality, and ensure the integrity of the country’s telecom infrastructure.

Consumers can apparently verify compliance by checking the device’s IMEI number via the NTRA’s “Telephony” app.
NTRA urges consumers to check the 15-digit IMEI number of any newly purchased phone via the “Telephony” app to verify its compliance with global standards. The users are also advised to request a tax invoice when purchasing a new phone and to report violations through its official channels. Traders and distributors are also warned against selling non-compliant phones, with legal action to be taken in coordination with the Consumer Protection Agency (CPA).
Telecom Regulation Law No. 10 of 2003 prohibits the import, manufacture, and sale of non-compliant devices with-out prior approval from NTRA, ensuring devices meet safety and technical standards.
