Expanded use of broadband spectrum in USA

      Back

In USA is the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) the federal authority for regulating communications by radio, television, wire, internet, Wi-Fi, satellite, and cable across the country. The FCC has now taken steps to expand broadband access that it says will support spectrum use by utilities and critical infrastructure entities.

A Report and Order issued by the Commission adopted new rules that will provide access to all 10 MHz of the 900 MHz band. This action will reportedly enhance spectrum capacity to address the growing demand for private and secure wireless broadband networks serving utilities, critical infrastructure, and enterprise businesses.

The FCC says that its new rules will introduce a “county-level, negotiation-based process” that will support the deployment of broadband services under several configurations. This approach, according to the Commission, is part of its market‑driven transition and reflects its efforts to ensure the most efficient use of the spectrum in strengthening the American economy.

Key Aspects of the new rules:

    • Expanded Capacity: The action enables broadband deployment which enhances capacity for
      private, secure wireless networks.
    • Targeted Users: The rules are designed to support critical infrastructure, including utilities and
      enterprise businesses.
    • Flexibility: The new framework allows for a county-level, negotiation-based process, encouraging
private agreements and efficient use of the spectrum.
    • Transition Management: This action builds on previous, market-driven efforts to transition the
900 MHz band, removing prior limitations that capped broadband, such as the previously limited
5/5 MHz or 6 MHz options.
