New regulation in Indonesia for wide area network equipment

     Back

A low-power, wide-area network (LPWAN or LPWA network) is a type of wireless telecommunication wide area network (WAN) designed to allow long-range communication at a low bit rate between IoT devices (such as battery-operated sensors), and should not to be confused with Low-power personal-area network (WPAN).

Low power, low bit rate and intended use, distinguish this type of network from a wireless WAN that is designed to connect users or businesses, and carry more data, using more power. The LPWAN data rate ranges from 0.3 kbit/s to 50 kbit/s per channel.

In November last year, the Indonesian communication authority SDPPI issued a draft new regulation for consultation on Non-Cellular LPWAN to replace the 2019 version.

On 3 January this year, SDPPI released the finalized technical regulation which is denoted: KEPMEN KOMINFO NO.5 TAHUN 2024, "Technical Standards for Non-Cellular Lower Power Wide Area Network (LPWAN)Telecommunication equipment".

This regulation defines non-cellular LPWAN devices and specifies their configuration. The equipment must be classified as either fixed, vehicular, or portable, and it must be permanently factory locked to work only within the radio frequency bands allocated in the regulation.

The technical requirements include the following aspects/parts: -Power supply, -Non-ionizing radiation, -Electrical safety, EMC (Immunity & Emission), -Allowed frequency bands: (433.05-434.79 MHz, 920-923 MHz, and 2400-2483.5 MHz), -Filter requirements for devices with operating frequency 920-923 MHz, -Test methods with ref. to IEC-, CISPR- and ETSI standards.
