In my dual role as the Safety Lab Supervisor at Nemko, my primary responsibility involves the comprehensive evaluation and verification of products to ensure they align with established safety standards. I am dedicated to conducting thorough assessments, identifying potential hazards, and implementing safety measures to guarantee the reliability and compliance of the products we handle. Simultaneously, as the Safety Lab Supervisor, my focus extends to creating and maintaining a safe working environment within our laboratory. This dual role allows me to play a pivotal part in both product safety evaluations and the assurance of a secure workspace, ensuring that Nemko adheres to the highest standards of safety across all facets of our operations.
How did you choose this career path?
I embarked on my career path with a practical mindset, influenced by my father's advice to get a trade. Joining the Navy in 2010 as an electrician's mate provided hands-on experience working on diverse components of Navy ships. Post-military service, I transitioned to the University of San Diego's electrical engineering program, enhancing my theoretical knowledge. Joining Nemko, I've steadily progressed in my role as a Safety Lab Supervisor, where I apply both my military and academic background to ensure compliance and product safety, reflecting a purposeful and diverse career trajectory. This journey has allowed me to seamlessly integrate my trade skills, academic learning, and practical experience within the dynamic realm of safety engineering.
What do you enjoy most about your job at Nemko?
Working as a Safety Lab Supervisor at Nemko, my role involves the meticulous verification of manufactured products to ensure they meet compliance standards. One of the most enjoyable aspects of my job is the sheer diversity of products that come across my desk, offering a continuous stream of new challenges and learning opportunities. The collaborative environment at Nemko adds an extra layer of satisfaction, as I have the privilege of working with great people who share a passion for ensuring product safety. What truly excites me is the hands-on aspect of my work, where I get to tinker with circuits and conduct fault testing. This hands-on engagement not only aligns with my personal interests but also provides a fulfilling avenue for problem-solving and experimentation in the realm of product safety. Overall, the combination of product diversity, collaborative teamwork, and the opportunity for hands-on testing makes my role at Nemko both engaging and rewarding.
Are there any challenges that you’ve faced during your career that have taught you important lessons?
Navigating complex safety standards as a Safety Lab Supervisor has taught me how to communicate effectively, especially when explaining intricate technical details to customers. Breaking down these standards into understandable information and working collaboratively have become crucial aspects of my job. Juggling professional challenges with parenthood has emphasized the importance of managing time and maintaining a balance between work and life. These experiences improved my adaptability and resilience, highlighting the need for clear communication at work and the importance of having a supportive environment. Overall, facing these challenges has shaped my ability to thrive in both my career and as a parent.

In the next two decades, I anticipate a transformative shift in various industries. The integration of communication among cars and the widespread adoption of the Internet of Things (IoT) will likely revolutionize our daily lives. Household appliances connected to IoT, enabling remote operation, are poised to become commonplace, enhancing convenience and efficiency. The pervasive influence of artificial intelligence (AI) is expected to reshape communication methods and redefine how tasks are performed. This convergence of technological advancements suggests that the industry will not only be more deeply involved in our lives but also experience exponential growth as it adapts to these dynamic changes.
What are some market trends you’re keeping an eye on?
I'm closely monitoring key trends in electrical compliance, with a focus on energy efficiency, the integration of sustainable energy, cybersecurity measures, and the rise of smart and connected devices. The industry's commitment to optimizing power usage and reducing environmental impact, coupled with the increasing emphasis on cybersecurity in interconnected systems, reflects dynamic challenges and opportunities. The proliferation of smart devices adds an additional layer of complexity to ensure compliance with evolving regulations. These trends collectively shape the evolving landscape of electrical compliance, demanding continuous attention and adaptation.
When not working, how do you spend your spare time?
In my leisure time, I enjoy a diverse range of activities. Playing video games, watching movies, and catching up on sports are some of my favorite ways to unwind. I also find joy in listening to music, spending quality time with my son, and engaging in activities that strengthen our bond. Playing golf, relaxing at the beach, and socializing with friends contribute to a well-rounded relaxation.
What does the average day in the life look like for you?
I typically kick off my workday around 8 am, beginning with a thorough check of emails and Microsoft Teams. The first hour is dedicated to responding to any urgent emails or messages. The bulk of my day is then spent on two main activities: writing reports and conducting equipment tests using various methods.
What is your favorite song, show, or book at the moment?
I like the Bible because there are so many stories, each with a profound emotion of both joy and sadness. There is so much diversity of narratives that all weave together to create a larger book with human experiences. These stories provide a timeless source of wisdom, guidance, and inspiration. The Bible is full of human reflections and lessons useful to everyone.
