Kenny Mai
Field Evaluations Engineer
How long have you been working in the field? How long have you been working for Nemko?
I started in the NRTL space around 9 years ago working for UL. I spent about 3 years there with sometime in the interim working in other industries. I came back last November 2025.
What drew you to this field initially?
It was a great way to get a jack-of-all trades experience touching relevant industries in the Bay Area.
List the areas of your experience working in FE/SI/NSF or any related field (standards, types of testing, etc.)
I have primarily been working in UL891 for NEMKO. In the past, I did general category inspections, luminaires and UL 508A.
Is there a particular part of your job you find the most exciting or interesting?
I enjoy working directly with customers. Building relationships with new contacts has been the common thread among all my positions that’s keeping me engaged.
Why do you like working for Nemko?
The team here is fantastic. The flexibility of the role is also a great perk. It allows me to work my life around the job.
What do you think the industry will look like in 20 years?
I think that the test & certification space will remain fairly resilient over the next 20 years. I view it as product and technology infrastructure that is agnostic to the normal boom and busts of other industries. There will be a market demand as always for 3rd-party validation and statements of compliance/quality.
What are some market trends you’re keeping an eye on?
The apparent one is the influence of AI as it gains competence deeper and deeper into the white-collar space. As someone that uses AI very extensively for a myriad of uses in personal/professional life, I see it being a catalyst for many of the changes we’ll see over the next couple of decades.
When not working, how do you spend your spare time?
I primarily spend my time learning guitar and reading books covering anything I am interested in. It is very important to me to always feel a sense of motion in my life; learning and seeing your progress in something is my favorite way to go about it.
