Field Evaluation Specialist
Define your role within Nemko.
I work closely with Authorities Having Jurisdiction (AHJs), both locally and regionally, helping introduce them to Nemko and our Field Evaluation services. I also serve as a liaison between Nemko, customers, and regulatory organizations, attend industry meetings, and provide field evaluation training for AHJs and companies that require these services.
How did you choose this career path?
My career actually began in aviation technology. While attending graduate school in Dallas, I was laid off from my aviation position and responded to a job advertisement from UL for a Field Representative. I applied and was hired the very next day. At first, I didn't see it as a long-term career, but after a few months I realized how much I enjoyed the work. What I thought would be a two-year opportunity turned into a lifelong career in product safety and field evaluations.
How long have you been working in the field? How long have you been working for Nemko?
45 years. (UL-20 years, ETL-20 years, consultant-2 .5 years) Nemko 2.5 years.
Is there a particular part of your job you find the most exciting or interesting?
Interaction with various groups and individuals as I have an opportunity to tell the Nemko story.
Why do you like working for Nemko?
I enjoy working in a very forward-thinking group led by an excellent manager. Collaboration has been rewarding with staff resulting in good relationships.
Are there any challenges that you’ve faced during your career that have taught you important lessons?
Not every day at work (or in life) will be great, but every day has the potential to be great if we look beyond the moments that can discourage us.
What do you think the industry will look like in 20 years?
Artificial intelligence is the biggest wildcard for our industry. Its long-term impact will depend on how effectively it's implemented and adopted within the testing, inspection, and certification (TIC) industry.
Describe what a typical day working looks like for you.
Being part-time, my workday can be as few calls and emails for less than an hour to a travel day that takes me to a local, SoCal meeting. Or a trip to LAX which turns into a travel day to attend/speak at a professional meeting.
What do you find most rewarding about your role?
Working with people in pursuit of a worthy common goal.
What does the average day in your life look like for you?
Family esp. grandkids, church activities, and Pickleball one to four days a week.
