Lead Auditor in the Management System Certification department

    Define your role within Nemko.
I am a lead auditor within the Management System Certification department, working with standards such as ISO 9001 for quality, ISO 14001 for environment, and especially ISO 27001 within information security. I also have a few customers within the HS&E area and ISO 45001.

How did you choose this career path?
Well, I've been working with ISO standards since the mid-'90s, but on the other side, developing management systems within the company. It was a coincidence when the management system certification department at Nemko reached out to ask if it was possible for me to do some audits for them from time to time or to perhaps have a job within the company. At the time, it was 2009, and it was a great time for me to change careers. So, I started, and since Nemko was interested in having ISO 27001 experience on board to get approved for that standard, this was very interesting.

What do you enjoy most about your job at Nemko?
It is a fascinating job; the position allows me to travel around to get to know very exciting businesses, and I get to talk to all levels in the organizations, from top managers to everyone that works within the companies. I can be my own boss and run my own schedule, and as long as all things are handled for the customers, and they are satisfied, it all works out.

Are there any challenges that you’ve faced during your career that have taught you important lessons?
What I find to be challenging is working with the ISO 45001 standard. It is within the health, security, and environment. It's a very heavy standard, and I need to talk to many people, and I think it is a bit challenging to work with. Especially in the start, it was a bit difficult to find out how to work with that standard, but I have some excellent colleagues from whom I have learned a lot, so now it's ok, but not my favorite standard.

What do you think the industry will look like in 20 years?
I think the need for management systems will increase in the coming years, especially within information security and related areas and environment and social responsibility.

What do you find most rewarding about your role?
It’s a very interesting job for me. Of course, there´s a lot of work to do, but as long as I can manage it independently, it´s a perfect setting for me. Within my department, there are many great colleagues that are great to work with, and we often go together in audits, which is nice.

What are some market trends you’re keeping an eye on?
Within information security, cyber security, and related standards, a lot is going on, for example, cloud systems. The environment is also important, and it is usually a requirement to be certified within environment, to be able to do business with the authorities. There is also a lot of attention on the environment around the world, so I think it is becoming a more prominent concern, in addition to social responsibility.

When not working, how do you spend your spare time?
I have four grown children and five grandchildren, so I like to spend time with them as often as possible. As a hobby, I enjoy playing some music, especially on guitar. I also used to play piano for many years, but now I have a lot of electric guitars and other string instruments.
