Define your role within Nemko.
I am International Approvals (IA) service regional manager, responsible for Asia countries IA service channel and pricing, local IA service development and training, as well as being alert to industries updates and regulation changes.
How did you choose this career path?
Before I started working in the certification industry in 2003 (a small ILAC testing lab in Toronto Canada), I worked in the manufacturing industry as a statistic clerk, and the purchasing manager, for AV and household appliances. The experiences I gathered in manufacturing have prepared me well when switching my career to the certification industry.
What do you enjoy most about your job at Nemko?
My position requires extensive research on regulations, I enjoy this part as it opens my mind and allows me to stay on top of IA knowledge. I've met great people in Nemko and I enjoy the free environment of exchanging ideas and knowledge, it helps us grow together!
Are there any challenges that you’ve faced during your career that have taught you important lessons?
Absolutely there was. Especially when I just started working in the certification industry. One of the important lessons I have learned is when solving issues, try to think outside of the box, have a cool mind, and do step-by-step analysis – and never forget to pay attention to documentation details!
What do you think the industry will look like in 20 years?
From a technology standpoint and the wide application of big data, I think in 20 years the industry standards and certification scheme structure will probably come to a maximized harmonization than ever. There may be drawbacks since country certification also serves as part of a trade barrier, but the trend is to be more open and harmonized. I will not be surprised that one day manufacturers can select and purchase worldwide services via an “Amazon” alike platform, and I hope Nemko will be one of the best E-Certification service providers.
What do you find most rewarding about your role?
When working on the IA database and supporting colleagues for solving IA related issues.
What are some market trends you’re keeping an eye on?
Asia, middle east countries, CIS countries as well as tier 1 countries in Africa and S. America.
When not working, how do you spend your spare time?
In summertime, I enjoy camping in up north part of Ontario, I love the nature.
In wintertime, I enjoy being couch potato reading or watching TV series together with my cat, Sandy.
