    Meet Mel Kleven

    Mel Kleven Headshot RoundMel Kleven

    Field Evaluator

    Define your role within Nemko.
I am excited to work with Authorities Having Jurisdiction (AJHs), both local and regional, to introduce and elevate their awareness of Nemko’s story, particularly our Field Evaluation services

How did you choose this career path?
While attending grad school in Dallas, I was laid off from a position in the aviation industry. I responded to an ad from Underwriter’s Laboratories and was offered a position as a field representative in their Follow-up Service department. I didn’t look at it as a long-term position, but after a few months, I found I enjoyed doing surveillance audits. Eventually, I transferred to Tucson as a District Rep and then to Los Angeles as a Field Supervisor. My expected two years with UL became nearly 20. Followed by 20 more with Intertek, 18 of them doing Field Evaluations.

What do you enjoy most about your job at Nemko?
I enjoy working with people, both inside and outside of Nemko, and contributing to the success of our team.

Are there any challenges that you’ve faced during your career that have taught you important lessons?
Not every day at work (or in life) will be great, but every day has the potential to be great if we look beyond the moments that can discourage us.

What do you think the industry will look like in 20 years?
I’ve been working in the product safety industry for several decades and have seen many incremental changes. I expect the next 20 years will see much the same. However, AI may be the wild card that can greatly impact the future of all industries.

What are some market trends you’re keeping an eye on?
The practical impact of AI to positively influence the future of product safety.

What do you find most rewarding about your role?
Working with people in pursuit of a worthy common goal.

What does the average day in your life look like for you?
Family, church, exercise, and what’s left of my golf game---it’s mostly about the walk now.
